The Best Tips and Tricks for Visiting Harry Potter World

hogsmeade-vs-diagon-alley

From our experience visiting the parks the best Harry Potter tips and tricks are always going to start with making sure you’re taking advantage of early park admission whenever you can. This is especially true when Universal has Islands of Adventure open, as it really has the most popular Harry Potter ride in Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.  On top of that, it’s always important to make sure you have the Universal Park-to-Park ticket, as this is the only way you will be able to ride the Hogwarts Express.

What are the best tips for Harry Potter World at Universal Orlando?

  • Always take advantage of early park admission!
  • Be sure to get the Park-to-Park ticket to ride the Hogwarts Express
  • Take your time and explore everything! – Don’t miss the hidden details
  • Don’t forget to dress the part (Bring your robe and wand!)

Always take advantage of early park admission

harry-potter-orlando-tickets

Our favorite tip and trick for visiting The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will always be to take advantage of early park admission, which will allow guests into the theme parks exactly one hour before everyone else and is included with all of our multi-day Universal Orlando tickets. Taking advantage of this extra hour can be a game changer, especially when Universal Orlando has Islands of Adventure open for early park admission as it has the most popular ride in Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. We have found taking advantage of this extra hour can save you up to 90 minutes by avoiding longer lines later in the day on just that one ride.

Get park-to-park tickets to ride the Hogwarts Express

hogwarts-express-universal-faw

The Hogwarts Express offers a unique mode of transportation, exclusively available to guests with the Universal Orlando Park-to-Park ticket, seamlessly connecting the two Harry Potter lands of Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. It is actually the only ride that is not included with the regular Universal Orlando base ticket. As a general rule of thumb, we always recommend riding the Hogwarts Express in both directions as it will be a different experience both ways. Whether you’re traveling from Diagon Alley to Hogsmeade or vice versa, each journey offers a distinct and magical experience tailored to your original land.

Always stay on-site when possible

Another very important tip and trick to get the most out of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is to always stay at an official Universal Orlando hotel when possible. This is especially true for families who are only planning to visit Universal Orlando for one day and who are trying to take advantage of tip number one, which is early park admission. The main reason is that the only way to receive early park admission for a one-day ticket is to stay at an official Universal Orlando hotel. On top of this, guests will also always get the most out of their day by being as close to the parks as possible, which will result in less time spent driving to and from the parks.

Don’t miss the hidden details

One of my favorite things about the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is the incredible engineering done to create a magical world from the original Harry Potter books and bring them to real life. There are so many details and hidden easter eggs for guests to discover throughout both lands. So, with that being said, here are some of our favorite details to make sure not to miss when visiting Harry Potter World!

Hidden details in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

  • Gringotts Money Exchange – Exchange your Muggle money for Gringotts banknotes with an animatronic goblin in Diagon Alley. All exchanged currency can be used all around Universal Orlando and can be exchanged back into Muggle money at guest services if left unused.
  • Flourish and Blotts – This bookstore in Diagon Alley has a display of the classic The Tales of Beedle the Bard, which occasionally will open up and display magical animations.
  • Phone Booths – Pick up the phone outside of Diagon Alley and dial 62442 (MAGIC) to hear a surprise
  • Honeydukes: Look closely at the shelves in Honeydukes. You might spot a Chocolate Frog that occasionally jumps or a jar of Fizzing Whizzbees that buzzes.
  • The Hog’s Head: Inside the Hog’s Head pub, watch the Hog’s Head mounted on the wall. Every so often, it snorts and moves, adding an extra touch of enchantment to the atmosphere.
  • Dervish and Banges: Outside Dervish and Banges, you’ll find an assortment of magical objects, including Quidditch supplies and magical creatures. Keep an eye out for the Monster Book of Monsters, which occasionally growls and moves
  • Owl Post: Visit the Owl Post and look for the small postcards available for purchase. These postcards have a special Owl Post cancellation stamp that can only be found in Hogsmeade.

Bring your robe and wand

harry-potter-tips-and-tricks

Another tip that we love about the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is how you can show your Hogwarts school spirit and pack your Harry Potter robe and wand! That’s right. Universal Orlando does have a costume policy that prohibits certain items, but luckily, that does not include robes, ties, wands, and more! Hogwarts alumni are encouraged to represent their Hogwarts house in their robes, genuinely feeling like a student wandering the streets of Harry Potter World. Official Harry Potter robes sold in the parks even have a wand pocket, so pack your regular or interactive wand, too.

Check out interactive spells and wands

Interactive wands are one of our favorite ways to get the most out of our days within both Hogsmeade Village and Diagon Alley. They allow you to step into the shoes of a wizard or witch and perform the precise motions of spells at designated spellcasting areas, bringing the magic to life before your eyes. Imagine making a cauldron bubble and boiling with a swish of your wand or causing an envelope to levitate and float through the air—these are just a taste of the magical experiences awaiting you.

Insider tip: Certain interactive spell spots can become very crowded and overwhelming as the day gets later. Try interactive spells during early park admission when crowds are lower in the Wizarding World.

Try the Butterbeer!

universal-studios-butterbeer

That’s right, you heard it from us … try the butterbeer! Butterbeer in the Wizarding World comes in six different forms, such as a frozen or hot beverage, an ice cream flavor, and even fudge! If you have a sweet tooth, you won’t want to leave Universal Orlando without trying at least one version. And the best part is that it is non-alcoholic, so it’s intended for everyone, not just adults.

We’re happy to report that even our Vegan friends can get a version of Butterbeer in the Wizarding World. So make sure to ask before they start to pour. And if you’re looking for a fun souvenir, you can order the butterbeer in a special cup that you can bring home to remember your trip.

Visit both Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade Village

harry-potter-rides

At least on the East Coast, make sure you check out both Harry Potter Worlds in Universal Orlando. That does mean you would need a 2-day Universal Orlando base ticket or park-to-park ticket to get into both Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida, but it’s worth it! A trip to the Wizarding World doesn’t feel complete without hopping on the Hogwarts Express and being transported between the two lands.

Diagon Alley can be easy to miss if you start in Universal Studios Florida, so make sure you can find it. Diagon Alley is expertly disguised, just like in the books, and can be easily passed up by guests visiting. So, if you’ve found the Knight Bus and the streets of London, you’re close! This section of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is also one of our favorite lands to visit at night as it’s home to the fire-breathing dragon.

Attend Harry Potter shows and experiences (not just the rides!)

Many guests visiting the Wizarding World tend to overlook the entertainment offered throughout the day. Whether you’re visiting Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley, each land has unique shows with live entertainment for you to enjoy. So, one of our best Wizarding World of Harry Potter tips and tricks is to get a butterbeer, a handful of Fizzing Whizbees, and relax!

Hogsmeade Village shows:

  • Triwizard Spirit Rally
  • Hogwarts Frog Choir

You can find these shows on the stage in front of Hogwarts Castle, and I recommend these shows to those who want to show their school spirit!

Diagon Alley shows:

  • Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees (A special show during the holidays too!)
  • The Tales of Beedle the Bard – The Three Brothers
  • The Tales of Beedle the Bard – The Fountain of Fair Fortune

Find these shows undercover near the Gringotts Money Exchange, where guests are welcome to sit or stand on the cobblestone street to watch.

There are also other Harry Potter experiences like creating your elixir of a Protection Potion, Draught of Peace, Babbling Beverages, or more!

Don’t overlook Knock Turn Alley

Even if you’re a witch or wizard who tries to avoid the Dark Arts, we would still recommend descending upon Knockturn Alley. It can be easy to overlook due to being the shadows and well hidden. But make sure you find the entrance either next to the Leaky Cauldron or back near the Hopping Pot because it is well worth it. Step inside Borgin and Burkes to see oddities or even the infamous Vanishing Cabinet from the books.

Knockturn Alley is one of my favorite places to cool off from the Florida sun and wander through the world of Deatheaters and Dark Arts. We would say that the only downside is that it does not have a ride or attraction and is considered more of a walkthrough, but there are immersive experiences and hidden spells for your interactive wand.

Try to visit during the Holidays

Visiting The Wizarding World of Harry Potter during the holidays feels like the most authentic experience when visiting the parks. As a huge Harry Potter fan, there was something always extra cheery and comforting about the Christmases spent in the JK Rowling Universe. Universal Orlando does an incredible job capturing that warm, fuzzy feeling and it is our absolute favorite time to grab a warm butterbeer and explore.

Not only does The Wizarding World transform with twinkling lights, garland, bows, bells, and more – there are also special offerings like The Hogwarts Christmas Time Castle Show.

We also love visiting during Halloween time, know that Universal puts a LOT of energy into Halloween Horror Nights, so there isn’t too much offered in the Wizarding World. We do love the Dark Arts Castle Show during Halloween, which is projected onto Hogwarts Castle and extra spooky with Death Eaters galore!
