For all of you adrenaline lovers out there, you are probably wondering what are the scariest rides at Universal? We personally think that the most intense ride at Universal Studios Orlando is the Jurassic World VelociCoaster. No matter which row you’re assigned on the Jurassic World VelociCoaster, you’ll have an extreme adventure surviving through the raptor paddocks. Don’t worry if dinosaurs aren’t for you, there are plenty of other Universal Studios scary rides that will literally make your hair stand up!
Jurassic World VelociCoaster is definitely one of the most scary rides at Universal Orlando for many reasons. As a seasoned coaster lover myself, I still find myself wondering ever single time I ride VelociCoaster if it’ll be the last. With that being said, Velocicoaster is an amazing Universal roller coaster especially since it was just finished in 2021.
If you need to be convinced, here are all of the features that make VelociCoaster one of the most scary rides at Universal Studios Orlando:
If you’re looking to read a review of all thrill rides at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, check out our best Universal thrill ride guide! We talk about all attractions, not just the Universal Studios roller coasters and rank the best!
The best Universal Orlando roller coaster for kids would be the Flight of the Hippogriff, which is perfect for first-timers. As for the other Universal Studios Orlando roller coasters, most of them fall into a rather intense category for little ones. With that being said, there are roller coasters at Universal Studios that are great for older kiddos and teens, which we’ve separated below.
To help you understand the different intensity levels of the Universal Studios roller coasters, we’ve separated them into three categories. We recommend beginner level coasters for little ones who are just tall enough to ride or those looking for a smooth, gentle coaster experience. Moderate level roller coasters are perfect for those who aren’t looking to be terrified by their ride experience and want a little bit of thrill. The last category if for the most intense roller coasters at Universal, and are not for the faint of heart.
We are going to rank roller coasters at Universal Studios from most intense to least intense:
The Flight of the Hippogriff
The Flight of the Hippogriff is a Harry Potter themed kiddie coaster with no inversions and great views of Hogwarts Castle and Hogsmeade Village. Make sure to listen to Hagrid, as he points out all of the best tips on how to ride Buckbeak the Hippogriff.
Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts
Escape from Gringotts is the perfect ride for Harry Potter lovers, and those looking to enjoy a coaster-type ride with plenty of new tech. Explore the vaults at Gringotts bank and escape many mishaps, like a run in with Lord Voldemort. There is a rather interesting Escape from Gringotts drop, which holds guests and then lets them plunge about 30 feet into darkness.
Revenge of the Mummy
Escape the grasp of ancient mummies on this Universal roller coaster based off of The Mummy film from the 90’s with Brendan Fraser. Guests ride on mine cars through the ruins and riches of this cursed production and enjoy rather intense launches, one even going backwards!
Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure just opened up in 2019 and has stolen the hearts of all coaster lovers at Universal. Hagrid’s roller coaster has one of the best storylines and ride experience of any other attraction in Central Florida. This is personally our favorite Universal Studio roller coaster 2023, and will continue to be unless something more entertaining come out!
Take a field trip with Hagrid into the Forbidden Forest while riding his famous motorbike to see how many magical creatures you can find along the way. Hagrid’s is the MOST popular attraction in Universal Orlando with wait times reaching 200 minutes on busy days. We highly recommend riding during Early Park Admission, which is included in all of our Universal Orlando tickets!
Prepare for the hunt as you board this Universal Studios roller coaster that takes you directly into a velociraptor enclosure. Reach max speeds, tumble through the sky and do your best to escape the clutches of death on this very intense roller coaster.
The Incredible Hulk Coaster
Twist, loop and roll on this intense Universal coaster as you have become an experimental test subject to try and take down the Incredible Hulk. Guests can reach top speeds while being launched at 60 mph on this wildly entertaining, very green thrill ride.
Rip Ride Rockit
Jam along on the tallest roller coaster at Universal Orlando on the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit. As one of the big rides at Universal Studios, guests might be wary of the 90 degree angle climb up to the 167 foot steep hill drop. Don’t worry, you can pick some of your favorite songs to help guide you along on this rockin’ track.
The best roller coaster at Universal Orlando is Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, which is located in Islands of Adventure park. While this might be controversial, we think that there will always be a clear winner when it comes to the best Universal Orlando roller coaster 2023. While VelociCoaster might be the most intense coaster, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is the best Universal rollercoaster, possibly the best coaster in all of Florida! The Hagrid roller coaster offers so many incredible surprises, and no matter how many times we ride it, it never loses the magic.
If you’re wondering how intense is Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure or if it is scary, you will be delighted to know that is a step down from VelociCoaster. While there are some intense moments, most guests have been able to handle Hagrid’s while they cannot handle other rides like Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit or The Incredible Hulk Coaster.
Some things to note if you are concerned, there is a Hagrid ride drop, which is a 17 foot free fall. The drop is very quick and very small, but if you are afraid of drops, this ride might not be for you. There are also high speeds and a backwards launch, which can be intense and bit too much for certain guests.
There are no inversions on Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike adventure, which means it does not go upside-down! But it is important to note that if you’re concerned about Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure motion sickness, the ride does go backwards and have jostling moments.

While we know that Hagrid’s is the best Universal roller coaster, you are still probably wondering what is the right coaster for spot number two. Personally, if we were to compare Hulk Coaster vs VelociCoaster, we think that the VelociCoaster is the winner hands down. The Jurassic World VelociCoaster has all of the bells and whistles and has a cohesive, fresh theme that just feels epic. Also, when it comes to how fast the attractions are, The Hulk roller coaster speed just doesn’t match up to VelociCoaster. However, we think you should try it out for yourself on your next trip to Universal Orlando.
But, each ride is unique and our opinion might differ from yours on roller coasters at Universal. That’s why we are going to compare VelociCoaster vs Hulk coaster to see who has the better features overall.
The Incredible Hulk Coaster is an intense launched Universal rollercoaster that opened in 1999 themed after Marvel Comics. The Hulk in Universal is a seated coaster, with over the shoulder straps and many different thrill features such as inversions, launches, loops and corkscrews.
We would consider The Incredible Hulk Coaster to be very intense, and on the scarier side of coasters at Universal. This attraction features seven inversions, including a zero-G roll, two vertical loops, two corkscrews and high-speed drops. The Hulk drop is 110 feet, with the ride reaching a max height of 110 feet total. The ride also partially runs over water, which adds to the fear factor overall.
Both Universal roller coasters we are comparing offer an extra layer of intensity, which are moments where guests experience g force. We can’t say which is better, the Hulk or VelociCoaster g force, but both are intense and should be noted.
While we’ve covered most info on the VelociCoaster above, it is important to recap to truly compare Hulk vs VelociCoaster at Universal. While the Incredible Hulk’s features seem just as intense as VelociCoaster, it is clear which is the more intense roller coaster at Universal. Whether that makes it better than the Incredible Hulk or not is up to you!
While the tallest point on the VelociCoaster is 155 feet, the Velocicoaster’s drop is 140 feet, which is still very, very tall.
There are many coasters at Universal Orlando that have top thrill speeds with launches, loops and more! But, the fastest roller coaster in Universal Orlando is VelociCoaster, clocking in at 70 mph top speed. It is only slightly faster than number two, which, The Incredible Hulk max speed is 67 mph.
The biggest ride at Universal Studios is actually Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, which at maximum height is 165 feet! Most of the more intense roller coasters at Universal Orlando have drops over 100 feet, like The Hulk and VelociCoaster. You wont see smaller drops until you get down to the moderate coasters, where the Revenge of the Mummy drop height is only about 39 feet.
No, the Revenge of the Mummy does not go upside down. Instead, the Revenge of the Mummy uses thrills like high-speeds, dramatic drops and backwards motion. Rollercoasters at Universal that do go upside down include: The Incredible Hulk Coaster and VelociCoaster.
