What is the Difference Between Genie Plus and Lightning Lane?

disney-genie-vs-lightning-lane

As discussed above the Disney Genie Plus is a paid service that grants guests the privilege to bypass regular queues at select Disney World rides. The Disney Lightning Lane is not a service but the designated queue you enter to enjoy the ‘skip-the-line’ benefit for the ride you’ve chosen. To put it in terms of Genie+ vs Lightning Lane: think of Genie+ as the service you purchase and Lightning Lane as the location that you enter to skip the line. In our opinion from using the My Disney Experience App where it gets confusing is that Disney sells individual premium “a la carte” Lightning Lane passes for bigger attractions which is separate from their “Disney Genie +” service. However it’s important to note that these premium lightning lane rides are a paid service as well, with the lightning lane still being the designated queue.

Is Lightning Lane the same as Genie Plus?

Are Lightning Lane and Genie Plus the same thing? Not quite. Though both features enhance the guest experience at Disney parks, they serve unique purposes. Lightning Lane acts as the physical line that you use to get on the ride, skipping regular Stand-By. On the other hand, Disney Genie Plus is a premium service offering the convenience of scheduling a return time for Lightning Lane access. Grasping the subtle yet significant differences between Genie Plus and Lightning Lane is crucial for maximizing your enjoyment during your Disney adventure.

Is Lightning Lane included with Genie Plus?

Yes, the Disney Lightning Lane, which serves as the ‘skip-the-line’ queue, is incorporated into the cost of the standard Disney Genie+ rides. By opting for the Disney Genie Plus upgrade, guests can select from over 40 attractions. They can then schedule arrival times to access these rides via the Lightning Lane. It’s essential to distinguish between Genie Pass vs Lightning Lane and understand the nuances and to fully leverage the benefits. But, individual a la carte Lightning Lane rides like Tron Lightcycle Run and Guardians of the Galaxy, are NOT included with the price of Genie+. Those rides must be bought separately from the regular Genie+ Lightning Lane rides, however they would still give you access to the lightning lane.

Why So Much Confusion Between Disney Genie Vs Lightning Lane?

genie-plus-and-lightning-lane

You might be wondering at this point why is there so much confusion between the Genie + vs Lightning Lane? And one of the main reasons is the Premium ride selections. As discussed the regular Disney Genie+ upgrade includes over 40+ attractions throughout Walt Disney World. Very simply if a guest purchases the Disney Genie+ it will give them Lightning Lane access to the rides they make a reservation for. However on the flip side many guests have started to call the Premium ride selections “Individual Lightning Lanes”. So this would mean that guests would purchase an Individual Lightning Lane to have access to the Lightning Lane queue for that ride.

In example one the Disney Genie Plus vs Lightning Lane has a distinct difference. Taking it one step further guests understand that they must purchase the Disney Genie Plus service in order to give them access to the Disney Lightning Lane so the only product that has a cost is the Disney Genie+. However on the flip side guests purchasing the Premium selections are now reading that they must purchase an Individual Lightning Lane to access the Lightning Lane queue for that ride. For this reason we believe that it’s causing a ton of confusion around the major differences between the Genie+ and Lightning Lanes.

How Many Rides Can You Get On With the Disney Genie Plus and Lightning Lane?

genie-vs-lightning-lane

This is another very popular question, especially since the Disney Genie Plus and Lightning Lane now have an additional cost to access them. And on average we believe that guests will typically be able to access two to three of the Lightning Lanes which are included with the Disney Genie+ service. Now it’s important to note that the park that each guest is visiting will also play a role into just how many rides you will be able to go on. With the main reason being there are certain parks such as Hollywood Studios which have more thrill rides and just less rides in general. This is different from a park like Magic Kingdom which have more rides and a majority being aimed towards families visiting Disney World.

How many Lightning Lanes are Included with Genie Plus?

As discussed there are over 40 Lightning Lanes which are included with the regular Disney Genie+ paid service. However we have found that most families will only be able to take advantage of two to three rides through the Disney Lightning Lane and this is especially true if visiting Disney during one of the busier times of year. On the flip side if visiting Disney World during one of the slowest seasons such as September of January we have found that you can easily double the amount of Disney Lightning Lane rides you can access.

Disney Genie vs Lightning Lane FAQ

f-a-q

Q: What is the Disney Lightning Lane?

A: The Disney Lightning Lane is the skip the line queue available to anyone who upgraded their Disney World ticket to include the Disney Genie Plus. The Lightning Lane is the opposite of the regular standby line and it will be shorter. Guests can choose an arrival window for one ride at a time and once their arrival window has opened each guests will enter the ride using the Lightning Lane for that attraction. It’s important to note that the Disney Lightning Lanes are also different from any ride participating in the Disney virtual queue system.

Q: What is the Disney Genie Plus?

A: The Disney Genie Plus is a paid service that allows guests to skip the lines at participating Disney attractions through what is called the Lightning Lane. The Disney Genie Plus service is available the morning of your park visit and guests can begin to make their first ride selection at 7:00 AM.

Q: Do you need Genie Plus to get Lightning Lanes?

A: Another popular question we receive is do you need Disney Genie Plus to get Lightning Lanes? And as a general rule of thumb guests do have to purchase the Disney Genie Plus or one of Disney Genie Premium selections to enter one of the Disney Lightning Lanes. The exception to this rule would be if guests are using the Disney DAS pass or rare situations where guests might have received a pass for a ride breaking down which they would be able to use at participating Lightning Lanes to skip the line for that attraction.

Q: How many Lightning Lanes can you book at once?

A: Guests can make one Lightning Lane selection at a time using the regular Disney Genie Plus paid service, except if they have not made a Lightning Lane selection in more than 120 minutes. Guests can also make one Premium Lightning Lane selection at a time and can make a total of 2 Premium selections within a day. On the flip side guests using the regular Disney Genie Plus service cannot access the Lightning Lane for the same ride twice within the same day.
