Best Strategies for Disney World Lightning Lane

This article is your complete guide to the best Lightning Lane strategy for each Disney World park! What you will find below is that having a great Lightning Lane strategy isn’t just about picking rides that will save you a ton of time standing in line. You also have to be mindful that Disney World Lightning Lanes can and most likely will sell out. So making sure you pick the rides with the earliest sell out time is just as important. That’s why in this article I’m going to break down the best Lightning Lane strategies based on both wait time and sell out times.

If you just need the mechanics — what Multi Pass is, how tiers work, what it costs — I already broke all of that down in my Lightning Lane guide and the Multi Pass tiers breakdown. Start there if you’re brand new. This post assumes you know the basics and want to know how to win the day.

Which Disney World Parks Do You Need Lightning Lane For?

what-is-the-genie

As a general rule of thumb, we typically find Lightning Lanes at Magic Kingdom to almost always be worth it, especially if you’re only visiting for one day. The second best park for Lightning Lanes is Hollywood Studios because it has some of the most popular rides out of all of the Disney World parks with the highest wait times. Hollywood Studios also has a lot more shows that will take up more time compared to some of the other parks as well.

Which Disney parks are worth Lightning Lane?

Park Is Multi Pass worth it? My default move
Hollywood Studios Almost always Buy Multi Pass and Single Pass. Highest standby waits on property, smallest ride roster, reservations vanish fast.
Magic Kingdom Usually Buy Multi Pass and Single Pass. Deep roster means good midday availability — but the density of long lines makes it pay off.
EPCOT Sometimes Rope drop Test Track + one Single Pass (Guardians). Multi Pass only on busy days.
Animal Kingdom Rarely Rope drop + Flight of Passage Single Pass. Skip Multi Pass most days.

For a deeper cost-benefit breakdown, I keep this updated over on is Lightning Lane worth it at Disney World!

Magic Kingdom Lightning Lane strategy

Is Disneyland bigger than Disney World?

Magic Kingdom is the park where Multi Pass can quietly transform your day! In my opinion, the best way to get the most out of your day is to combine Lightning Lane Multi-Pass with Single Pass for both Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Tron. You’ll see below that, although Big Thunder Mountain has one of the highest average wait times, you can typically grab it after you scan into your first ride.

The rides I book first at Magic Kingdom

Ride Avg wait Sells out around Pass My call
TRON Lightcycle Run 62 min 8:29 AM Single Book the instant your window opens
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train 46 min 9:20 AM Single Book instantly — see below
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad 53 min 10:25 AM Tier 1 #1 Multi Pass pick
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure 35 min 12:34 PM Tier 1 Strong Tier 1 fallback
Peter Pan’s Flight 37 min 2:55 PM Tier 1 High, esp. with little kids
Jungle Cruise 33 min 3:06 PM Tier 1 Rope drop instead
Winnie the Pooh 24 min 4:08 PM Tier 2 Top Tier 2 pick — book early
Buzz Lightyear 15 min* 4:59 PM Tier 2 Grab in 2026, will settle
Space Mountain 28 min 7:27 PM Tier 1 Later-day pickup
Haunted Mansion 27 min 9:19 PM Tier 2 Available all day — don’t rush it
Pirates of the Caribbean 16 min 9:59 PM Tier 2 Fill/skip
“it’s a small world,” Under the Sea ~10 min 10:20 PM+ Tier 2 Never sells out — pure fill
Dumbo, Mad Tea, Speedway, Carpets, Barnstormer 8–12 min 9:30 PM+ Tier 2 Skip unless kid-driven
Monsters Inc., PhilharMagic 11–13 min 7:00 PM+ Tier 2 Never spend a slot on it

Sample Magic Kingdom Lightning selections

  • Tier 1 – Big Thunder Mountain /or Peter Pan
  • Tier 2 – The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
  • Tier 2 – Haunted Mansion
  • Lightning Lane Single Pass – TRON Lightcycle Run
  • Lightning Lane Single Pass – Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

Hollywood Studios Lightning Lane strategy

slinky-dog-dash-disneys-hollywood-studios

If there’s one park where I almost never skip Multi Pass, it’s this one. Hollywood Studios has the highest average standby waits on property and the smallest roster of rides you actually care about — which means everyone is chasing the same handful of popular rides throughout the day.

Ride Avg wait Sells out around Pass
Slinky Dog Dash 59 min 7:47 AM Clear Tier 1 Winner
Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance 52 min 9:19 AM Single Pass Must Do
Toy Story Mania 27 min 7:32 PM Pick as Your Tier 2
Tower of Terror 29 min 11:28 AM Pick as Your Tier 2
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets new 12:26 PM Grab after you scan into first ride
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway 34 min 4:34 PM Later-day pickup
The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure (new) 49 min 5:32 PM Pick as Your Tier 2
Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run 26 min 8:35 PM Later-day pickup
Alien Swirling Saucers 16 min 8:25 PM Later-day pickup
Star Tours 7 min 8:46 PM Later-day pickup

Sample Hollywood Studios Lightning selections

  • Tier 1 – Slinky Dog Dash
  • Tier 2 – Toy Story Mania
  • Tier 2 – The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure
  •  Lightning Lane Single Pass – Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

EPCOT Lightning Lane Strategy

Epcot is one of the parks that really makes a difference if you are staying at an official Disney World hotel or not. The reason is that we find you can knock out 1-2 of the most popular attractions with early entry. So my recommendation would be if you have early entry, you can buy a single pass for Guardians and hit Test Track and Frozen during your early entry. If you do not have early entry I would book both Lightning Lane Multi-Pass and Single Pass.

The two numbers that drive the strategy

Ride Avg wait Sells out around Pass
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind 59 min 7:42 AM Book Single
Test Track 59 min 8:20 AM Book Tier 1
Frozen Ever After 38 min 10:35 AM Pick between this or Remys after you scan into your first ride
Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure 46 min 10:47 AM Pick between this or Frozen after you scan into your first ride
Soarin’ Across America 20 min 8:11 PM Pick Tier 2
Mission: SPACE 17 min 8:20 PM Tier 2
Spaceship Earth, The Seas, Figment, etc. ~10 min 8:20 PM+ Pick Tier 2
The Seas, Figment, etc. ~10 min 8:20 PM+ Later-day pickup

Sample Epcot Lightning selections

  • Tier 1 – Test Track
  • Tier 2 – Soarin’
  • Tier 2 – Spaceship Earth
  •  Lightning Lane Single Pass – Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

Animal Kingdom Lightning Lane Strategy

animal-kingdom-lightning-lane-avatar

Animal Kingdom is the park where I most often tell people to skip Multi Pass entirely. There are no tiers here (Disney doesn’t tier this park), and the strategy is refreshingly simple. However, it’s important to note that this could change with some new rides coming in the very near future.

The two numbers that drive the strategy

Ride Avg wait Sells out around Pass
Avatar Flight of Passage 57 min 1:24 PM Use Single Pass
Na’vi River Journey 28 min 3:22 PM Use Multi Pass
Kali River Rapids 29 min 4:51 PM Later-day pickup
Expedition Everest 18 min 4:56 PM Use Multi Pass
Kilimanjaro Safaris 32 min 5:29 PM Use Multi Pass

Sample Animal Kingdom Lightning selections

  • Tier 2- Na’vi River Journey
  • Tier 2 – Expedition Everest
  • Tier 2 – Kilimanjaro Safaris
  • Lightning Lane Single Pass – Avatar Flight of Passage

Tips for Picking the Best Disney World Lightning Lanes

1. Book by sell-out time, not just by wait time

This is the single biggest mistake I see, and it’s the reason I built every table above with two columns. Wait time tells you how much a reservation saves; sell-out time tells you whether you can still get one after you scan into your first ride. When they disagree, sell-out time wins for your advance picks, because a reservation you can’t get is worth nothing. That’s why Winnie the Pooh (24-min wait, 4:08 PM sell-out) is a better advance pick at Magic Kingdom than Haunted Mansion (27-min wait, 9:19 PM sell-out): Haunted Mansion will still be there at 3 PM, and Pooh won’t. Book the things that vanish; grab the things that linger same-day.

2. Always be holding a reservation

The moment you tap into your first Multi Pass ride, you can book your next one. So the golden rule is: never let yourself hold nothing. Not necessarily something perfect — something useful. Then refresh, modify, refresh again. A slightly-less-exciting ride in the area you’re already standing in beats a “better” ride that marches you across the park for no reason. Location is part of the value.

3. Rope drop what you won’t Lightning Lane

Your rope drop plan and your Lightning Lane plan are two halves of the same strategy. The logic is simple: if you’re not going to book a Lightning Lane for a ride, go ride it first thing when the standby is short. If you are going to Lightning Lane it, sleep on it and hit it midday. Don’t waste the calm morning hours on a ride you already have a reservation for.

4. Never make a Lightning Lane Single Pass for early in the morning

There is no advantage of making a Lightning Lane single pass reservation for early in the morning. The reason is you will not unlock another single pass as you do for Multi-Pass. So if you’re trying to grab more multi-pass selections, only book those for as early in the morning as possible.
